UAE Trade Name Rules
Most name rejections are avoidable and come from the same handful of rules. The important distinction, which almost nothing online makes clearly, is between words that are banned outright and words that are merely restricted — allowed, but only with a specific regulator approval.
Banned vs restricted — the distinction that matters
You will find pages stating that words like Dubai, Emirates, Ministry and Federal are prohibited, and others treating the same words as approval-only. Both are describing something real, which is why the advice looks contradictory.
| Category | Status | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Religious terms | Banned | Names or attributes of God; terms tied to religious sects |
| Offensive or indecent wording | Banned | Profanity, discriminatory or obscene terms |
| Political terms | Banned | Political groups and bodies |
| Other brands and government projects | Banned | Global or local brands, named government projects |
| Place names | Restricted | UAE, Emirates, emirate and district names, airport codes |
| Regulated financial words | Restricted | Capital (Central Bank), FX (DGCX) |
| Sector words | Restricted / zone-specific | University, Hospital, Hotel, Group, Holding, Invest |
| Commodities | Conditional | Only with multiple commodities or a general trading activity |
Restricted does not mean impossible. It means the licensing authority will refer your application to another body, which adds time. Banned means no amount of approval will carry it through.
The rules that actually cause rejections
- The name must reflect the activity. A consultancy licence needs a name that reads as consulting. A mismatch is one of the most common refusals and catches people who picked a brand name first.
- Personal names must be complete. First, middle and last name. A surname alone is not accepted, and the person named must actually be an owner or partner in the company.
- No abbreviations of a personal name. You cannot shorten or initialise it.
- Nothing too close to an existing active company. This is checked against the register, and similarity, not just an exact match, is enough to refuse.
- No opening with International, Middle East or Global as the leading word, and the name cannot simply be a translation of another registered name.
- No web extensions such as .com or .ae in the name, at least in several free zones.
- Trade name registration is not trademark protection. They are separate. Registering the name does not stop anyone else using the brand.
Reservation: the 72 hours and the 180 days
Once a name is approved you generally have 72 hours to pay the reservation fee. Miss that and the approval lapses and you start again. Once paid, the name is typically reserved for 180 days, which is your window to complete the licence.
Submit three options ranked in order. Most authorities ask for this anyway, and it converts a rejection from a restart into a same-day move to your second choice.
Why published lists disagree
There is no single national list. Rules come from the licensing authority: DET on the Dubai mainland, and each free zone separately. They overlap heavily but not completely, and the documents people quote are often old — the widely circulated government guideline dates from 2017 and a well-known free zone version from 2020.
Some free zones add their own restrictions that do not exist elsewhere. Words like University, Hospital, Hotel, Group, Holding and Invest are disallowed in at least one major Dubai free zone, and at least one restricts Crypto specifically. Check the list for your zone, not a general one — including this page.
Trade Name Rules — FAQs
Why was my UAE company name rejected?
Most often because the name does not reflect the licensed activity, because it is too similar to an existing active company, or because it uses a personal name incorrectly. A personal name must be the full first, middle and last name of someone who is actually an owner or partner, and it cannot be abbreviated. Religious, political, offensive and brand-infringing terms are refused outright.
Can I use Dubai or Emirates in my company name?
Usually yes, but as a restricted term rather than a free one. Place names including UAE, Emirates, emirate and district names and airport codes generally need authority clearance rather than being banned. This is why some pages list them as prohibited and others as approval-only; both are describing the same restriction from different angles.
How long is a UAE trade name reserved for?
Typically 180 days once the reservation fee is paid, which is your window to complete the licence. You usually have only 72 hours from approval to pay, and if you miss that the approval lapses and the name goes back into the pool.
Does registering a trade name protect my brand?
No. Trade name registration and trademark registration are separate. A registered trade name secures that name on the commercial register; it does not stop another company using the brand on their goods or services. For that you file a trademark with the Ministry of Economy, per class.
Can I use just my surname as a company name?
No. Where a personal name is used it must be the full name, first, middle and last, and that person must be an owner or partner in the company. A surname alone, or initials, will be refused. This catches a lot of family-business applications.
Do free zones have different naming rules to the mainland?
Yes, and that is the main reason published lists disagree. There is no single national list: DET governs the Dubai mainland and each free zone sets its own. Some zones disallow words such as University, Hospital, Hotel, Group, Holding or Invest, and at least one restricts Crypto. Always check the list for your specific zone.
