Frequently asked questions

Is there income tax on salaries in the UAE?

No. The UAE does not charge personal income tax on employment income. For most expats, the only regular deduction is the job-loss (ILOE) insurance premium of AED 5 or AED 10 a month plus VAT. UAE and GCC nationals also pay a pension contribution.

How do I calculate my salary per day in the UAE?

For labour-law purposes (gratuity, leave, unpaid-day deductions) the daily rate is your monthly salary divided by 30. For comparing pay, you can also divide your yearly salary by the number of days you actually work. The calculator shows both.

How do I calculate my salary per hour?

Divide your daily rate by your working hours per day. Under the UAE Labour Law normal hours are up to 8 a day and 48 a week, so the legal hourly rate is monthly salary divided by 30, divided by 8.

What is the ILOE insurance deduction?

The Involuntary Loss of Employment insurance is mandatory for most private-sector employees. It costs AED 5 a month plus VAT if your basic salary is AED 16,000 or less, and AED 10 a month plus VAT if it is higher. It pays up to 60% of your basic salary for up to three months if you lose your job.

Why does my basic salary matter?

Gratuity, leave encashment and the ILOE category are based on basic salary, not total salary. Allowances such as housing and transport are excluded from those, so a higher basic share means higher end-of-service benefits.

How much pension do UAE nationals pay?

UAE nationals in the private sector contribute to the GPSSA pension. Guides report 11% of the contribution salary for members registered under the 2023 pension law and 5% for earlier members. Check your rate with GPSSA, then pick it in the calculator.
