Frequently asked questions
How is overtime calculated in the UAE?
Overtime is paid at your hourly basic wage plus at least 25%. Your hourly basic wage is your monthly basic salary divided by 30, divided by your normal daily hours (usually 8). This is Article 19 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.
Is overtime calculated on basic salary in the UAE?
Yes. The law says overtime is calculated according to the basic wage, not the total salary. Allowances such as housing and transport are not included.
What is the overtime rate between 10 pm and 4 am?
At least 50% on top of the hourly basic wage, so 150% of the hourly basic rate. Shift workers are excluded from this higher rate.
What do I get for working on my rest day?
Either another rest day off, or the wage for that day plus at least 50% of the basic wage for that day (Article 19). You cannot be made to work more than two rest days in a row, except day labourers.
What do I get for working on a public holiday?
Either a substitute day off for each holiday worked, or the wage for that day plus at least 50% of the basic wage for that day (Article 28).
How many overtime hours are allowed in the UAE?
Normally no more than 2 hours of overtime a day, and total working hours may not exceed 144 hours in any 3 weeks (Article 19). Normal working hours are up to 8 a day or 48 a week (Article 17).
Does overtime apply to managers?
The Executive Regulation can exempt some categories from the working-hours rules, and senior management roles are commonly among them. Check your contract and the Executive Regulation.

Information only, not legal advice. Your contract may pay more than the legal minimum. DIFC, ADGM, government and domestic workers follow different rules.
