Can I Cancel My Own Visa in the UAE?
It depends entirely on who sponsors you, and that is the distinction almost no page makes. If a company sponsors you, you cannot cancel your own visa — the sponsor must. If you sponsor yourself, you can.
Who can cancel what
| Your visa type | Can you cancel it yourself? |
|---|---|
| Employment visa, company sponsored | No — the employer must apply |
| Investor / partner visa via your own company | Yes, but acting as the company, not as yourself |
| Golden visa (self-sponsored) | Yes — you are your own sponsor |
| Freelance / self-sponsored permit | Yes |
| Family member sponsored by you | Yes — you are the sponsor |
| You sponsored by a spouse or parent | No — your sponsor must apply |
The logic is consistent: the sponsor holds the cancellation right, because the sponsor carries the obligations. So the real question is never "can I cancel my visa" but "who is my sponsor" — and for an employee the answer is the company, even if you own that company, because the company is a separate legal person from you.
If you own the company, you are both sides
This is the case that confuses people most. As an owner on an investor or employment visa issued by your own company, you cannot cancel it "as yourself" — you cancel it as the company, acting through the company's portal access, establishment card and authorised signatory. Practically you can do it, but the route is the company route, and it needs the company to be in good standing: licence valid, establishment card valid, no portal holds.
That is why an expired licence traps owners. You cannot cancel your own visa because the company that must do it is not in a position to transact. The fix is to bring the licence and card current first, even when you are closing down. See cancelling a trade licence.
What MOHRE can and cannot do without you
Two separate things are often merged here, and they are not the same:
- The work permit or labour card sits with MOHRE and the employment relationship. An employer can terminate employment and cancel the permit following the proper process, and MOHRE records that. Your signature on cancellation papers is part of the normal process, and refusing to sign does not by itself prevent a lawful termination from proceeding.
- The residence visa is issued by ICP or GDRFA, not MOHRE. MOHRE does not cancel residence visas. The sponsor applies to immigration for that.
So "can MOHRE cancel my visa" has a precise answer: no — it is not the issuing authority for your residence visa. It governs the work permit side. Free zone employees sit outside MOHRE entirely, with the zone performing that role. See labour card vs work permit.
The grace period afterwards
Once a residence visa is cancelled, a grace period runs before you must leave or move to another status. It is commonly described as 30 days, but the length varies by visa type and category — some routes carry longer windows — so confirm the figure that applies to your own cancellation rather than assuming 30.
- The clock runs from the cancellation date, not from your last working day
- Overstaying past it triggers daily fines and can affect re-entry
- Dependants you sponsor are cancelled with you, and their grace period is tied to yours — a frequent and expensive oversight
- A new employer can usually apply for status change within the window without you leaving the country
The dependants point is worth repeating: cancelling your own visa quietly cancels your family's. Plan their status before, not after.
Before you cancel
- Settle and close any loans or credit cards — banks are notified and may block or call in facilities
- Resolve the Emirates ID and any linked services; the ID is surrendered or deactivated
- Check your dependants' position and theirs separately from yours
- Keep the cancellation paper. It evidences that you left status lawfully, and you will be asked for it
Cancelling Your Own Visa — FAQs
Can I cancel my own visa in the UAE?
Only if you are your own sponsor. On a company-sponsored employment visa you cannot, because the employer holds the cancellation right along with the obligations. On a golden visa, a freelance permit or any self-sponsored status you can. If you are sponsored by a spouse or parent, that sponsor must apply.
Can I cancel my visa if I own the company that sponsors me?
Yes in practice, but you do it as the company rather than as yourself, through the company portal access, establishment card and authorised signatory. It requires the company to be in good standing, meaning a valid licence and establishment card with no holds. An expired licence is what traps owners, since the entity that must cancel cannot transact.
Can MOHRE cancel my visa?
No, because MOHRE is not the issuing authority for a residence visa. Residence visas are issued and cancelled by ICP or GDRFA on the sponsor application. MOHRE governs the work permit side, and an employer can terminate employment and cancel the work permit following the proper process. Free zone employees sit outside MOHRE entirely.
Can my employer cancel my work permit without my signature?
Your signature on cancellation papers is part of the normal process, but refusing to sign does not by itself prevent a lawful termination from proceeding through the proper channels. If you believe the termination or the settlement is wrong, the route is a MOHRE complaint about the substance, not withholding a signature.
How long is the grace period after visa cancellation?
Commonly described as 30 days, but the length varies by visa type and category and some routes carry longer windows, so confirm what applies to your own cancellation. The clock runs from the cancellation date rather than your last working day, and overstaying past it triggers daily fines and can affect re-entry.
What happens to my family when my visa is cancelled?
Dependants you sponsor are cancelled along with you, and their grace period is tied to yours. This is one of the most expensive oversights in a cancellation, because people plan their own status and discover their family is out of status at the same time. Arrange their position before cancelling, not afterwards.
