Ajman Free Zone Licence Renewal

Ajman is one of the cheaper UAE zones to enter, and that is precisely why renewal surprises people. The question to ask is not what renewal costs in isolation, but how much of your first-year price was promotional.

What renewal costs against year one

Ajman Free Zone competes on entry price. Renewal generally lands in the region of 70% to 100% of the original licence fee, and which end you hit depends on your package rather than on the zone.

What recurs. Indicative structure — confirm with the zone for your licence.
ItemAt renewal
Licence feeRecurs — the core cost
Registration / incorporationDoes not recur — one-off at setup
Smart office / flexi-desk / officeRecurs annually, renewed alongside
Establishment cardRecurs, normally bundled with the licence
Visa allocation and visa costsCharged per visa as each falls due
Security depositHeld, not recharged; refundable at closure

If your setup included a bundled visa allocation or a discounted smart office, those are the lines to check first. Charged at standard rates from year two, they are what makes a renewal invoice look higher than expected even though the licence fee itself has not risen.

The renewal sequence

  1. The zone issues a renewal notice and invoice ahead of expiry — commonly 30 to 60 days out
  2. Renew the facility: smart office, flexi-desk, office or warehouse, as applicable
  3. Clear any outstanding invoices, fines or portal holds
  4. Pay through the zone portal; the licence is reissued electronically
  5. The establishment card renews alongside, as it does in most zones
  6. Employee and investor visa renewals can then proceed

Facility renewal in step two is the dependency people forget. The licence cannot be renewed without valid premises of some form on record, and in a zone like Ajman that "premises" is often a smart office or desk package rather than a physical room.

Visa renewal is a separate cost

The licence renewal does not include visa renewals. Each residence visa comes due on its own cycle and is charged separately, with its own medical test and Emirates ID steps. Two practical points:

  • Visa renewals cannot proceed while the licence or establishment card is expired, so a late licence renewal cascades into staff falling out of status
  • Your visa quota is tied to your facility type, so downgrading your office at renewal to save money can reduce how many visas you are permitted — see free zone visa quota

That second point is the trap worth money. Saving a few thousand dirhams on the facility can cost you a visa slot you need.

Late renewal

Expect late fees that escalate by month, suspended portal access, and frozen visa transactions. Because the zone holds a security deposit in many cases, prolonged non-payment can be settled against that deposit — so the loss may only become visible when you eventually close the company and find there is nothing to refund. Confirm current late charges with the zone rather than relying on any figure published elsewhere, including ours.

Cancelling instead of renewing

If you are not continuing, cancel formally rather than letting the licence lapse. Lapsing keeps employee visas live, keeps sponsorship obligations with you, keeps tax registration open, and accrues fines. Cancellation in a free zone is an administrative deregistration and far quicker than a mainland liquidation, but it still requires visas cancelled and the immigration file closed first. Full order: cancelling a UAE trade licence.

Is Ajman still the right zone at renewal

Renewal is the cheapest moment to reconsider, because you are not writing off paid licence period. Ajman stays competitive on price and is well placed for trading and light industrial activity near the port. The reasons to move are structural rather than financial: a visa quota the facility cannot support, an activity approval the zone does not hold, or a client or banking requirement for a specific emirate. Ajman Free Zone Renewal — FAQs

How much does Ajman Free Zone licence renewal cost?

Generally in the region of 70% to 100% of the original licence fee, with the position depending on your package rather than on the zone. One-off setup items such as registration and incorporation do not recur. A bundled visa allocation or discounted smart office from your first year, charged at standard rates afterwards, is the usual reason a renewal invoice looks higher than expected.

Can I renew an Ajman Free Zone licence online?

Yes, renewal runs through the zone portal. The zone issues a renewal notice and invoice ahead of expiry, commonly 30 to 60 days out, and the licence is reissued electronically once the facility renewal and any outstanding invoices are settled. What tends to hold renewals up is an unrenewed facility or a portal hold, not the payment itself.

Does the Ajman renewal include my visa renewals?

No. Each residence visa comes due on its own cycle and is charged separately, with its own medical test and Emirates ID steps. Visa renewals also cannot proceed while the licence or establishment card is expired, so a late licence renewal cascades into staff falling out of status through no fault of their own.

Does the establishment card renew with the licence?

In Ajman, as in most free zones, yes, it renews alongside the licence rather than as a separate filing. That bundling is why many free zone companies are unaware the card exists as a distinct document, but it still gates every employee visa action behind it.

What happens if I renew the Ajman licence late?

Late fees escalate by month, portal access is suspended, and visa transactions freeze. Because the zone holds a security deposit in many cases, prolonged non-payment can be settled against that deposit, so the loss may only become visible when you close the company and find nothing to refund. Confirm current late charges with the zone directly.

Can I reduce my renewal cost by downgrading the office?

Sometimes, but check the visa consequence first. Visa quota is tied to facility type, so moving to a smaller package can reduce how many visas you are permitted to hold. Saving a few thousand dirhams on the facility can cost a visa slot you actually need, which is far more expensive to resolve.
